Who We Are
Teaching Fellows & the College of Charleston

The Teaching Fellows program was founded by the South Carolina Center for Education, Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) in 1999 in response to the South Carolina General Assembly's request to implement a program that would aim to prepare the best and brightest future educators in the midst of the growing teaching shortage throughout the state.

There are currently Teaching Fellows programs at 12 colleges and universities (see a complete list here) throughout the state of South Carolina. Teaching Fellows receive $6,000 annually which can be used towards college tuition, housing, and other fees, eventually accumulating to $24,000 over a 4-year span. In return, Fellows promise to teach in a South Carolina public school for the 4 years following graduation.

Teaching Fellows, in comparison to non-Teaching Fellows education majors, benefit from more specialized and individualized instruction, unique field-based service opportunities, more time in the classroom prior to graduation, professional development, conferences, and more in an attempt to shape students into the best educators they can possibly be.

Why College of Charleston?
Regardless of which college or university you attend, the Teaching Fellows program is universal in offering unique instruction and hands-on experiences. However, we would love to have you as a College of Charleston Teaching Fellow. Here's what our current Teaching Fellows have to say about their experiences as a College of Charleston Teaching Fellow:

Testimonials
"I've benefited from Teaching Fellows because it's given me a group of people who understand the issues behind education. I love problem-solving with people who know what they're talking about and are passionate about it.
I've been able to refine my interpersonal skills as a Teaching Fellow. This helps a lot with leadership. If you're thinking about applying, do it! If you're thinking about joining, do it! The programming in Teaching Fellows is something unique to our program; there's nothing like this on CofC's campus."
